Ash House
“A domestic masterwork built around an ash tree…”
AAI Awards, 2020
AAI Awards, Winner, 2020
RIAI Awards, Best House, 2019
A two storey home shaped by its landscape of stone walls, a small folly and a mature ash tree that anchors the plan. Two brick volumes are set to capture light and create sheltered garden courts, linked by a timber lined thread that frames views and carries circulation.
Inside, calm, legible spaces unfold in a sequence of masonry and timber. Polished concrete reflects shifting light, while upper floors lined in Douglas fir bring warmth and tactility. Openings are positioned to extend the crafted language of brick and timber into the garden.
The house is defined by thresholds: from stone boundary to planted court to interior rooms, each space grounded by the presence of the ash tree and the surrounding landscape.
