Domestic Void

Domestic Void is an exhibition installation developed in response to the theme of interstitial space. It explores the spaces between, within, and beyond rooms, the intervals and gaps that shape domestic architecture but are rarely foregrounded.
The installation is conceived as a series of spaces growing from a central column of light. It draws from common spatial conditions across three domestic projects: a courtyard within a converted coach house, a lightwell through a multi-storey dwelling, and a vertical light shaft within a two-storey home. These references are abstracted rather than reproduced, allowing the work to operate independently of site or programme.
Viewers engage with the piece through a sequence of apertures that offer controlled perspectives. Framed views establish a dialogue between solid and void, positive and negative space, open and enclosed conditions. Light is treated as an active material, animating the interior volumes and revealing structure, depth, and proportion.
The material palette is deliberately restrained. Finnish birch plywood is used throughout, reinforcing the relationship between surface, structure, and light. Domestic Void positions the interstitial not as residual space, but as an active architectural condition that shapes experience, atmosphere, and use.
