Deerpark
IDI Awards, Best Extension (nom.), 2022
Deerpark is a 1950s semi detached family house set on a steeply sloping site between a mature parkland edge and long views across Dublin city. The project reworks the existing house and garage, retaining the garage walls to support a new timber portal frame that defines a planted entrance court. This becomes a new threshold, marking arrival and reorienting access toward the rear of the house.
The extension is positioned to engage both the slope and the views. Groundworks step through the landscape, forming a sequence of courts and planted gardens while creating level changes that organise the internal spaces. Kitchen and dining areas are held at the higher level, overlooking a new living space that nestles into the existing terrain. Above, the master bedroom is positioned to relate simultaneously to the park and the city beyond.
Concrete block fin walls are aligned with key sight lines, framing internal spaces while opening controlled views toward the landscape and city lights. Timber infill elements slot within this structure to provide access, seating, shelter, privacy, and light. The material palette is deliberately modest, relying on exposed concrete block and timber throughout to create a quiet, robust architecture rooted in place.
